Paper 2: translation into Arabic and written response to works
Translation the hard way — into Arabic — plus two extended essays on the works you studied.
Paper 2 is 110 marks and 30% of the qualification. No dictionary, and no documentation on the works.
Section A — Translation into Arabic (20 marks)
An unseen English passage rendered into Arabic. Harder than it looks, and the section where accurate grammar earns marks fastest — every agreement and case ending is visible to the marker.
Section B — Written response to literary texts (45 marks)
An extended essay on one or two of the prescribed literary texts, choosing one question from a choice of two for each text.
Section C — Written response to film (45 marks)
An extended essay on one prescribed film, again one question from two. Film essays are won on cinematic technique — if your essay would read identically about a novel, you’ve left marks on the table.
The structural choice you have to make
You study two works, and they can be either two literary texts, or one literary text and one film. You cannot answer on two films. If you answer on two literary texts in Section B, you skip Section C entirely. It’s a real decision, better made early in Year 12 than late. Which works to choose →
